TweetDeck VS HootSuite

I can’t remember which one I learned of first but since about a year ago between Hootsuite and Tweetdeck I almost forget to even log into Twitter.  It seems like where Twitter may be a cool sports car Hootsuite & Tweetdeck are like the Porsche and Ferrari versions of the Social Networking site.

They are so much alike that outside of appearance they’re almost running neck and neck.  But there a few benefits that one has over the other.  For starters they both let you manage multiple twitter accounts and see the Twitterverse in multiple dimensions.  They both allow you to categorize your tweets and the tweets of people you follow so they’re all on the same screen.

Both allow you to manage who you follow and who follows you with just a few clicks although Its easier to to handle important tasks like blocking spammers through Tweetdeck.  But there are a few areas where Hootsuite takes the cake.

For starters Tweetdeck  seems to be having problems with their link shortening feature.  No matter how many times I login it says I must be authenticated to shorten links.  If I need to tweet a link I have I never experience that problem with Hootsuite.  Also Tweetdeck will only let you go back so far when trying to recover some interesting tweet.   With Hootsuite once you get to the bottom of a column it automatically loads more of your past tweets.

Of course the deciding factor for me is that since I use different computers in different locations I can access Hootsuite via the web while Tweetdeck has to be installed on your computer.

What has your experience been with either of these apps?  Do you have something better in mind?

  1. I'll keep this short and tweet — I like Hootsuite! It has all the features I need and I love that my ping account is attached so that I can reach all my networks at once.

I tried TweetDeck for a while and I know some people really swear by it. I didn't care for the distraction of messages popping up in the corner of my computer screen all the time.

    Hi Sheila
I’m really getting into this Cloud Computing trend so if I can use it without having to install the program on my computer I’m all for it. I’m on Twitter as @TheHighRoad drop me a line if you ever have a question.

I was a huge TweetDeck fan…but something got buggy and I have never been able to figure it out, even with help from support.

I have installed Hootesuite. Do you know of someone that does quick tutorials? Taking the time to learn it right now is a little overwhelming.

I have just signed up for Hootesuite. Now to learn it.

I never used TweetDeck, but I like Hootsuite, so that's my only reference point. I also used the Hootsuite Android App – horrible. It worked for a few weeks, now it keeps crashing. So, I started using Seesmic Android app, which I love. Why am I telling you this? Because they now have a desktop app – which allows you to view FB, FB pages and twitter. So maybe you want to add that to your review :)
    Thanks,

Never tried Seesmic but I do remember they incorporated the FB feed before anyone else. Now you can do the same with HootSuite and TweetDeck too.

  7. I like HootSuite a lot. I tend to forget it has the FB tie-in. Need to use that! Thanks for the reminder. I don't know if I had TweetDeck. I deleted a couple things and one was Twhirl.
