Do The Math: When Discipline >Motivation Success is Guaranteed

This is the 2nd post in a series on Focus, Effective Planning and Producing Results .  Check out the post that started it all.

One of the biggest events in the history of professional boxing will be taking place tonight.  Its an understatement to say I want to go to my neighbor’s house to watch with the rest of the invited guests.  But I wanted to make sure I completed this post for today.

In the previous post I spoke about Focus and how it boils down to visualizing a specific result for all of our efforts and intentions and not losing sight of the result due to distractions or circumstances.  Its possible to be very motivated to reach your goal for a period o time but there are always times where your motivation wanes or you have a greater motivation to do something else (like go watch this championship boxing match).

Part of the focus that’s so necessary to succeed is discipline.  And as you can see in the title I give discipline way more value than motivation.  Here’s the definition I’ll go with fom dictionary.com

Discipline:  Training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement. Kinda like this 30 day Blog Challenge.

Its inevitable that you will experience a day when you don’t feel like doing what you must do that day.  There will even be times when you feel that its probably a waste of your time to strive for the goals that you set for yourself.  But just like math equations are cut and dry so too is the attitude that is needed for you to be successful.

The odds may be stacked against you, circumstances may present themselves as difficulties or even impossibilities. These are all things that you can only respond to.  They are all the variables in the equation.  What you do have control over is your self.  And the only way to move closer to the goal you are focusing on is to have the discipline to take the appropriate action when you need to no matter how you’re feeling.

When you decide to be unstoppable success is inevitable. (HighRoadism)

  1. I'm certain there are some who will say you have this backward. But I find that having a regimen (a routine or “discipline”) is the best thing I've got going for me.

You're right. There are days when I just don't feel motivated – can't seem to find an ounce of enthusiasm – those days and times when my life is just absolutely VOID of vim and vigor. However, I'm one of those folks who's a stickler for sticking to a routine, which includes daily activities to move my business forward.

I guess you can say I'm blessed!

    Valuable post,

Thanks Malanie. That kind of validation is encouraging. If you’re teaching single mom’s who are entrepreneurs as well I know you must have the discipline of a Drill Sergeant. I’m paying close attention to you too. :-)
