Between Discipline & Motivation

Recently I was in some kind of funk.  I knew there were tasks I needed to complete but I just couldn’t get my butt in gear.  When I get that feeling I’ve learned to pay attention because I’m about to learn a valuable lesson.

From writing to yoga to praying as often as I should to eating right and loads of other stuff I just can’t seem to get with the program and do what I know I need to do.  Not a real fun or comfortable place to be.  I had to literally look in the mirror and ask myself; “What’s wrong with you Vern? Your word is supposed to be your bond”.

I used to do yoga everyday.  I used to never miss an opportunity to stop & make a conscious connection with The Creator.  I used to follow the disciplined dietary guidelines in the book How To Eat To Live by Elijah Muhammad who taught that its best for human beings to eat one balanced meal every 24 hours with no snacking in between meals.

A year ago I decided that I wanted to study, learn and DO internet marketing.  Blogging, creating niche sites and writing articles was going to be my new passion.  I love all of these things but I thought to myself;  “I’ve got a serious lack of motivation”.

Then I had an epiphany.  Over the last year that’s been happening a lot lately.  Maybe because the big 40 is on the horizon.  There is a big difference between motivation and discipline.  Motivation is a temporary phase of every process  but discipline has to be part of a person’s constitutional makeup.

According to Google, the definition of motivation is: the psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal; the reason for the action. Sometimes its easy to lose sight of that reason that arouses you to action.   That is where any of us can lose steam and get stuck.  But discipline is a developed quality that enables you to do what you have to do even when you don’t feel like doing it.

Discipline trumps motivation 90 percent of the time.  But it takes more than saying “Just Do It”.  So  I had to issue a call to action to myself and I’m issuing the same call to you.  Discipline saves lives and wins battles & if you poll any successful person in your chosen field they will also say that discipline is critical to reaching any worthwhile goal.

Over the next week or 2 I’m going to identify some of the most effective ways to strengthen discipline and come up with a game plan for becoming the type of person who can accomplish the tasks at hand.  If you want to join my accountability team for mental, physical or spiritual success then leave me a comment & I’ll be in touch.
